About This Special Issue
Dear Colleagues,
Endometriosis and uterine fibroids are frequent gynecological disorders in women of reproductive age. Endometriosis causes pain symptoms (such as dysmenorrhea, deep dyspareunia, non-menstrual pelvic pain, and dyschezia) and it may be associated with infertility. Uterine fibroids cause heavy menstrual bleeding and may affect fertility. Both endometriosis and uterine fibroids may impair quality of life, working efficiency, and sexual life.
Ultrasonography plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis of these gynecological disorders; other imaging techniques (such as magnetic resonance imaging) can be used for the diagnosis of endometriosis. Hysteroscopy and sonohysterography may be used to assess the characteristics of uterine fibroids.
Hormonal therapies have been widely used for the treatment of symptoms caused by endometriosis and uterine fibroids; however, these therapies are not curative, and symptoms usually recur after the discontinuation of therapies. Alternatively, these conditions can be treated by minimally invasive surgical techniques (such as laparoscopy, robotic surgery and hysteroscopy).
The aim of this Special Issue is to gather in one collection reviews and original contributions to illustrate the state of the art and the envisaged future in the management of women with endometriosis and uterine fibroids.
